Pantheon

The Pantheon, the most preserved of all Roman momuments, was dedicated to all gods, hence the name. It was first constructed under the consulship of Agrippa, in 27 BC, to commemorate the victory of Augustus at Actium. It was damaged by a fire in 80 AD, but restored by Domitian. It has been restored and redecorated several times, including a total rebuilding by Hadrian in 125 AD.

The Pantheon demonstrates the Roman use of concrete in the construction of the dome. Concrete allowed the Romans to cover vast interior spaces. The building rises to a height of 142 feet. This compares to a height of 139 feet for the dome of St.Peter's Basilica, and 140 feet for the height of the nave of Chartres Cathedral.
