Upper class families were able to either hire a personal tutor or send their children to a school. Unlike schools today, only boys recieved an eductaion, and there was never an individual building for the school. Instead classes were often held in a separate room of a shop, sectioned off by a mere curtain, or more commonly in the forum.

There were no books which lesson were taught from or that students used for study. Teachers tuaght by a system more similar to lectures. Lessons were taught merely as facts, but there was usually no explanation as to why something was right or wrong, or how it came to be. Subjects that students learned include reading, writing, poetry, Greek, rhetoric, and philosophy.
