Mountains
Alps
The Alps or Alpes in Latin, is a mountain range in southern Europe. It stretches from the Mediterranean to the Adriatic Sea. This range separates Gaul and Germany from the rest of the Empire. Due to it’s rugged terrain, it was difficult for enemies to pass through it, which (along with the Apennines), protected Rome from invaders. Some scholars suggest that this is one reason that Rome was able to dominate the continent.
Cities
Delphi
Delphi is located in the southern area of mainland Greece. it is very mountainous. In a Greek myth, Zeus found Delphi to be the center of the Earth. Delphi was home to the Oracle and was a major site for the worship of Apollo. Delphi is also home to the Temple of Apollo.
Regions
Etruria
Etruria is a region in central Italy that consisted of modern day Tuscany, Lazio, and Umbria. The inhabitants of this land were known as the Etruscans. Etruria and Rome were split apart by the Ciminian Forest. Originally Rome was part of Etruria, but they were able to split away from Etruria and create their own Empire. Rome would later take over Etruria. Much of Roman culture was taken from Etruria, such as the 12 Olympian Gods, the knowledge to grow olives and grapes, their alphabet, and their architecture.
Campania
Campania is a region in southern Italy. Famous cities such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum, and Velia were located in Campania. The land itself was hilly, with coastal lowlands that were good for farming. Because of this, this region was vital for feeding the Roman Empire. Originally, this land was inhabited by the Greeks, then the Etruscans, and then the Romans. It was considered to be a center of Greco-Roman culture, creating a blend of societies.
Latium
Latium is one of the original regions of Italy. It is located in the central western half of the country and it is home to the capital, Rome. The Tiber River is located in this region. Latium borders the Tyrrhenian Sea. Latium also shares a border with Campania, another region, which is southeast of Latium.
Provinces
Libya
Libya is located in current day Africa. It is what they called the continent of Africa. Libya borders the Mediterranean Sea in the north, and is located south of Italy. It was a very large province of the Roman Empire.
